Thirty Days of Mo(u)rning

A widower at forty-two. What Kateri gave me… what cancer took away… and how I'm coping with life from the woods of Vermont

img_2464The story pretty much goes that my life hasn’t changed too dramatically as we are going through this whole COVID-19 thing, but enough has happened that I’ve had to refocus some of my time and energy away from my blog!… which has been an interesting little pause for me as I come up on Kateri’s Death Date. I guess that’s why I felt the urge to at least post something!

So…… last week I made a video which I shared on Facebook… and this week I’m just gonna share it on here because I talk about… well… stuff I’m going through and how our current environment has had an affect on me as a widower and as a person. There have been other things that have recently happened in my life that I could write about such as getting a new chimney two days ago… and finally being able to burn some wood to keep the house warm instead of propane!… after a month and a half! (Man, I love having a “hot spot” to stand next to since I have a cute but drafty house… and it’s still 29 degrees at night.) Or I could write about how I fixed the water lines to my washer so that I don’t have to “get my steps in” every time I do a load of clothes as I would shuffle stainless steel mixing bowls and coolers full of water from the kitchen to the laundry room! I did this for months… MONTHS I say!… just because I didn’t want to deal with plumbing in the winter time in case something went wrong. (Water leaks and winter just don’t jive with me!)

Ok… instead of me writing about all the things I could write about… I’m just gonna throw on this video, let the chickens out, and have morning coffee over Facetime with people I love who are thousands of miles away. Awe… technology in the time of The Rona. Thanks smrt people… for keeping us connected!

ps…. I’ll warn you, the vid is eleven and a half minutes long!… and there are no pyrotechnics.

Nice to see you, too! And… it will be. I figure, I can only control so much and it’s gonna be a long trip so might as well settle into the seat and focus on the beautiful scenery going by instead of the ugly shit… that’s when I’ll take a nap!… or pretend I’m sleeping (with headphones on) just so that I don’t have to hear all the crap once in a while! Hope you’re well… as well!

Darren, it was so nice to see you and hear you. You have such a kind and gentle presence. Such a gift. You are right. There is a lot of loss happening around us, but so much good if we focus on seeing it. I send you all good wishes for strength and resilience. I send your mom the best of get well wishes. Family is, after all, the most important thing. Stay well and stay safe.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts without nonsense or denying the challenges. I hope your mom continues to improve. I am cheered by the work your job is doing. I have very little contact with the national scene, but I am encouraged by our governor and his cooperation with other NE governors. My daughter is throwing a surprise Zoom birthday party for her daughter’s 13th birthday. That is a very good thing.

Hi Darren. Have been wondering about you. I’m SO sorry to hear about your Mom. It’s never a “good time” to need a hospital, but this is definitely the worst because of the isolation from loved ones. So glad she’s home and hoping she feels much better.
There ARE so many moments of beauty and generosity going on around us. Sometimes it’s hard to see and hear with all the BS but you brought me back with your video. Thanks. Wishing you and all you love safety and peace. And, hugs are one of the things I miss horribly! We are all big huggers in our neighborhood. Virtual hugs to you.
      Nancy
